Congratulations to couples setting out to have an opposite sex civil partnerships this year

This ends the discrimination surrounding civil partnerships only being available to same sex couples.

The government was considering whether to abolish same sex civil partnerships completely following same sex marriage legislation coming into force. However they decided not to so that could only mean that civil partnerships needed to be opened up to all to avoid discrimination.

The legislation changes were largely due to an incredible campaigning couple who fought for years up to the most senior courts. Theresa May took up the cause and Conservative MP Tim Loughton created a private member’s Bill.

My lawyer friend has just started blogging & her first blog is about this. Worth a read if you want more information about the history & facts of civil partnerships.
